Ramayana Cast 2026: Full List of Who Plays Who

Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana assembles one of the most expensive casts ever put in an Indian film, and it does something unusual: it draws from Bollywood, Kannada cinema and Telugu cinema simultaneously, rather than casting a Hindi film and dubbing it. Here is every confirmed role, and the choices worth arguing about.

The three leads

Ranbir Kapoor as Ram. The highest-risk casting in the film, and the one taking the most criticism after the trailer. Kapoor plays Ram with heavy restraint — quiet, still, internal. A significant share of viewers read that as underpowered rather than divine, with the specific complaint landing on dialogue delivery. It's worth separating two things here: whether the interpretation is wrong, and whether four minutes of trailer is enough to judge it. We think the second question is genuinely open; the first will be settled in November.

Sai Pallavi as Sita. Widely regarded as the most instinctively right casting on the sheet — Pallavi's naturalism is unusual in an Indian mega-budget context, where the register normally tilts theatrical. The trailer gave her very little to do, which is a marketing choice rather than evidence about the film.

Yash as Ravana. The trailer's clear winner and, not coincidentally, a co-producer. Yash brings the stillness-plus-menace mode he built in KGF and scales it up. When a film's antagonist is the most praised element of its first trailer, that usually means the marketing found its hook early.

The supporting cast, and what each choice signals

Sunny Deol as Hanuman is the choice that raised the most eyebrows. Deol's entire screen identity is built on physical force — which maps onto Hanuman's strength, but not obviously onto the devotion that defines the character. It could be inspired or it could be the film's weakest link; the trailer didn't show enough to tell.

Arun Govil as Dashrath is the most deliberate piece of casting in the film. Govil played Ram in Ramanand Sagar's 1987 television series — the version that, for a generation of Indian households, simply is the Ramayana. Casting him as Ram's father is an explicit blessing passed from one adaptation to the next, and the trailer makes sure you notice. We unpack that lineage in 2026 film vs the 1987 series.

Amitabh Bachchan voicing Jatayu costs the production almost nothing in shooting days and buys enormous recognition in a single scene. Jatayu's death is one of the epic's most emotionally direct beats, and giving it that voice is a straightforwardly good decision.

Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi gets the most dramatically interesting role in Part 1. Kaikeyi drives the exile — the inciting incident of the entire story. If Part 1 works, a lot of it rests here.

Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha carries the film's turn from domestic drama into war. Her encounter with Ram and Lakshman is what sets Ravana in motion.

Ravie Dubey as Lakshman is the least-discussed principal, which is standard for the role — Lakshman is a reactive character in most adaptations. Whether this version gives him more is one of the open questions.

What this cast tells you about the strategy

Three things stand out.

It's genuinely pan-Indian, not a Hindi film with dubs. Yash from Kannada cinema, Sai Pallavi from Telugu and Tamil, Kapoor and Deol from Hindi. The trailer went out in five languages simultaneously. That's a distribution strategy encoded into the casting, and it's how you justify a ₹800cr+ Part 1.

It hedges devotional and commercial. Govil and Bachchan carry the traditional, reverent register. Yash and Kapoor carry the multiplex. The two audiences want different films, and the cast is built to serve both — which is also why the trailer response split so cleanly.

It's front-loaded on the antagonist. When your villain is your co-producer and your best-received performance, the sequel's centre of gravity is already shifting. Part 2 is the war. Part 2 is Ravana's film.

What we're still waiting on

The full credits list runs well beyond these nine — supporting roles across Ayodhya, Lanka and the vanara ranks haven't been broken out in detail publicly. For a two-part film with a war still to come, expect additions to be announced through the autumn.

For dates, formats and languages, see release date and where to watch. The full picture on the film is on the Ramayana hub. Full credits are on IMDb.

Frequently asked questions

Who plays Ram in Ramayana 2026?

Ranbir Kapoor. Reports around the trailer indicate the role is framed as a dual Vishnu avatar rather than Ram alone, which would be the production's most significant interpretive choice.

Who plays Ravana?

Yash, the KGF star, who also co-produces the film through his banner Monster Mind Creations. His Ravana was the most widely praised element of the trailer.

Who plays Hanuman in Ramayana?

Sunny Deol. It is the casting choice that generated the most immediate surprise — Deol's screen persona is built on physical force, which fits Hanuman's strength but sits at an angle to the character's devotional register.

Is Amitabh Bachchan in Ramayana?

Yes, in a voice role — he voices Jatayu, the vulture king who tries to stop Sita's abduction and is mortally wounded doing so.
