🏹 Ramayana Trailer Breakdown: Every Reveal, Shot by Shot

The first full Ramayana trailer went live at 4:15am IST on 30 July 2026 — timed to Brahma Muhurat, released in five languages at once, and running close to four minutes. It hit 5 million views in six hours and 10 million by hour nine. It is also, frankly, more revealing than most first trailers, and that gives us a fairly clear read on how Nitesh Tiwari has split the epic in two.

The release timing was the first statement

Studios drop trailers at 9am or noon for maximum working-hours reach. Putting this one at 4:15am is a choice that costs you nothing in a country where the film's core audience will set an alarm, and it signals what the marketing wants understood: this is being positioned as devotional event cinema, not a fantasy blockbuster that happens to use Hindu mythology.

Everything downstream follows from that positioning — including, as it turned out, the severity of the backlash.

What the trailer actually reveals about Part 1

The split point is now visible. The trailer moves through Ayodhya, the exile, Surpanakha, the abduction and the beginnings of the alliance with Sugriva and Hanuman. The war is present only as flashes — demon armies, a glimpse of Kumbhakarna. That places Part 1's ending somewhere around the mobilisation for Lanka, with the entire war held for Diwali 2027. It's the structurally obvious break, and the trailer confirms it.

Ravana gets the trailer's best material. Yash's introduction is given more room than anything else in the cut, and it is the single most praised element of the release. That's a marketing decision as much as a performance one: the antagonist is the hook, and the producers know it.

Ram is played restrained. Ranbir Kapoor's Ram is quiet, still and internal for nearly every frame he's in. Arun Govil is used as a bridge. Casting the actor who played Ram in the 1987 television series as Dashrath is not subtle, and the trailer makes sure you register him. The score is doing heavy lifting. Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are scoring together for the first time, and the trailer leans on the music through its biggest transitions. On a film where the visual effects are being questioned, the audio is currently the more confident half of the package.

The reveal nobody expected

Reports around the trailer point to Ranbir Kapoor embodying a dual Vishnu avatar rather than Ram alone — a framing that would expand the character well beyond a straight retelling. The trailer gestures at it without spelling it out. If accurate, it's the most significant interpretive liberty the production has taken, and the one most likely to generate argument closer to release.

What the trailer is careful not to show

• A finished Kumbhakarna. He appears, briefly, and the shot became the centre of the CGI criticism. A four-minute trailer that shows him for two seconds is a production hedging.
• The full Lanka scale. No wide establishing shot of the city. On a $500M film, the absence of a money shot in the first trailer is conspicuous.
• Sita's arc. Sai Pallavi is present but barely given a beat of her own. For a character carrying half the story's emotional weight, that's a marketing gap rather than a film-level one — but it drew comment.

Why this trailer matters more than most

Ramayana is carrying a reported $500 million across two parts, a worldwide IMAX rollout, and Sony handling international distribution. There is no version of this that succeeds on the domestic market alone. This trailer was the first real test of whether the film travels — and the early read is that the spectacle registers globally while the specific performance choices are being litigated at home.
