Ramayana Part 1 arrives at Diwali 2026 as the most expensive film India has ever made, in more formats and territories than any Indian release before it. Here's everything confirmed about when and where you can see it.

The theatrical dates

Part 1 — Diwali 2026. The widely reported date is 8 November 2026. Diwali is the single most valuable release corridor in the Indian calendar: extended holidays, family audiences, and the highest willingness to pay premium prices in the year. For a mythological, the alignment between festival and subject matter is worth real money at the box office.

Part 2 — Diwali 2027. Both parts were shot together, so this is a locked plan rather than a sequel greenlit on Part 1's performance. Part 2 is expected to carry the Lanka war.

Formats, and which one to pick

IMAX is the intended format. This is a film built around DNEG's effects work, and the creature and battle sequences are composed for the largest screen available. If you have a genuine IMAX screen within reach, that's the version to see.

One practical warning: book early. Godzilla: Minus Zero opens in North America on 6 November, two days before Ramayana, and both films want the same premium screens. In international markets especially, IMAX allocation in Ramayana's opening week may be tighter than the film's profile suggests.

Standard and premium large formats will carry the wide release. For a film whose visual effects are already contested, the format you watch it in will genuinely affect your verdict — compression on a smaller screen was a large part of why the trailer's creature work drew criticism. Languages

The trailer released simultaneously in five Indian languages, and the film follows the same approach. This isn't a Hindi film with dubs bolted on — the cast is drawn from Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil cinema deliberately, which is how a genuinely pan-Indian release gets justified. Internationally, Sony's distribution means subtitled and dubbed versions across major markets. The ambition is explicitly to reach audiences with no prior relationship to the epic — if you're new to the story, this version is being made with you in mind.

The streaming question

No OTT date has been announced, and we would not expect one soon.

Indian theatrical windows have compressed sharply in recent years — eight weeks is now common, and some films land on streaming in four. Ramayana is likely to be an exception, for a straightforward structural reason: Part 2 is a year away.

Putting Part 1 on streaming early would blunt the theatrical anticipation the producers need for Diwali 2027. The commercially rational move is to hold the window long, let Part 1 play out fully in cinemas, and time any streaming release to build demand for the sequel rather than substitute for it.

Our read: a streaming release before mid-2027 would be a genuine surprise. When it does land, the platform will most likely follow whichever deal was struck as part of the pre-sold non-theatrical rights that help finance a film at this cost — which we covered in the budget explainer.

What could still change

Release dates on films this size move, and there are two specific pressure points worth watching:

• VFX completion. With roughly 100 days from trailer to release and creature work already under scrutiny, a short delay to finish shots is not unthinkable. It would be costly — Diwali can't be rescheduled — but it's the pressure that most often moves a date.
• Competitive reshuffling. The festive corridor is crowded, with Drishyam 3 on 2 October and other releases in the window. Ramayana is the biggest film in the corridor and is more likely to make others move than to move itself.
