🎤 Michael Crosses $1 Billion, the First Biopic Ever to Do It

$1,010,133,475. Michael is the first biopic in history to cross a billion dollars. Lionsgate has never had a billion-dollar movie before. Its first one is about the King of Pop.

The number posted over the weekend, per The Numbers, and it clears the milestone that had held out on the genre for a century. Biopics win Oscars. They don't gross a billion. Until now.

The record it beats, and by how little

Oppenheimer held the biopic ceiling at $975M worldwide, set in 2023. Michael passed it, then kept going. The gap to a billion was thin, about $35M, roughly a strong Tuesday for a film still in wide release. So the "first biopic ever" line is real, not studio math.

Below Christopher Nolan's film sits Bohemian Rhapsody at $911M, the previous musical-biopic high. Michael is $99M clear of that one. For a genre whose blockbuster version was a Freddie Mercury movie nobody expected to work either, that's the whole story in one comparison.

Bohemian Rhapsody made its money on a $52M budget. Michael needed $155M to do it. Both cleared their costs many times over, but the ratio is worth sitting with. The King of Pop is an expensive man to stage, and the returns still dwarf the spend.

The math nobody at the studio will frame this way

Split the topline. Domestic sits at $372.2M, international at $637.9M. That's 63% of the gross coming from outside North America, a film about an American pop star doing most of its business overseas, which is the part that actually explains a billion. No single domestic run gets there. A global one does.

Against a $155M negative cost, $1.01B worldwide is about 6.5 times the budget on the board. Not profit. Theater splits keep roughly half the ticket, and marketing on a release this size runs into nine figures before a studio sees daylight. Still. A 6.5x multiple is the kind of number that greenlights the next five biopics whether or not their subjects can moonwalk.

The domestic leg tells its own story. Michael opened to $97.2M in April and has since multiplied that by 3.83. A multiplier north of 3.5 means the film held. Word of mouth carried it long after the opening-weekend fans cleared out. Compare that to the front-loaded superhero pattern, where a 2x multiplier is normal and 3x is a triumph. This one legged out like a hit from a different era.

Why a biopic, and why this one

The genre's problem has always been scale. A life story doesn't come with a sequel, a shared universe, or a toy line. It comes with a person, and people are a hard sell at $155M. Every studio pitch meeting knows the math that killed a dozen of these.

Michael got around it with the one subject where the music is already global IP. Antoine Fuqua directed. Jaafar Jackson, Michael's actual nephew, plays the lead in his first film role, which gave the marketing a hook no lookalike casting could buy. The soundtrack sells itself. The estate cooperated. You can argue about how a Michael Jackson movie handles the hardest chapters of Michael Jackson's life, and plenty of critics did, but the box office wasn't waiting on that argument.

I'd call this the real lesson under the record: the billion didn't come from the biopic template working. It came from a catalog most of the planet already knows every word of. That's not a formula the next studio can copy unless it also owns a King of Pop.

What decides the story next

Two numbers to watch. First, how far past a billion this climbs before it leaves theaters — every additional $50M widens the moat over Oppenheimer and makes the record harder to challenge. Second, the streaming and home-release window, where a title this size usually posts a second life that dwarfs a normal catalog drop.

The bigger question is whether the genre changed this weekend or Michael is a one-off. Studios spent a decade treating the billion-dollar biopic as impossible. It just happened. Whether the next one is Prince or Whitney or a title nobody's greenlit yet, the ceiling that argument leaned on is gone.
