🌟 Super Mario Galaxy Movie Heads to Peacock After $1B Run

$1.01 billion, and the couch still wins. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lands on Peacock July 30, closing a 120-day theatrical window as the only 2026 release to clear $1 billion worldwide.

It's also $350 million light of what the first film banked in 2023. Universal will lead with the billion. I'd lead with the gap.

How big was the run, really?

Domestic sits near $429 million. International adds roughly $580 million. Combined, call it $1.01 billion, the high mark on our 2026 box office chart, and the first billion-dollar clearance of the year, full stop.

Nobody else is close.

The next film to reach it, if one does, usually ends up the year's biggest release anyway, unless a December surprise crashes the party.

The pattern holds at every level of the ledger. Domestic kept 75%. International kept 74%. Daily pace, money in per day of the window rather than per day in theaters, landed at almost the same 74% ratio on its own, without anyone forcing it there. Geography barely moved either: domestic is 42.5% of the sequel's total against 42.3% for the original, a gap of two-tenths of a point sitting on top of a billion dollars.

A 26-point drop from a $1.36 billion original is a number most studios sign for without a second read. I would too. Sequels to record-setters rarely hold their full gross. Holding three-quarters of it in domestic, international, and daily pace at once is the sturdier tell: the audience didn't shrink, the calendar just got more crowded. Where $1.01 billion lands historically is on our all-time worldwide chart. Whether Illumination's hit rate still beats Disney's animation slate is an argument worth having separately.

Why exactly 120 days?

Run Universal's own math backward. Peacock gets the movie July 30. Strip out the 120-day window the studio quotes, and the theatrical clock started around April 1, not a date printed anywhere in the press notes, just what the arithmetic returns.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened April 5, 2023, and reached Peacock August 3, 2023. Count it: 120 days. Three years later, the sequel gets the identical runway, landing four calendar days apart from its predecessor almost to the week.

That's not a demand signal. It's a template.

I've stopped reading theatrical windows as proof a movie "kept selling tickets." A studio picks a number once, likes the results, and reuses it. None of that makes the habit wrong. A family movie with legs earns a long hold, because every ticket sold in month three is revenue Universal would otherwise hand its own streaming service for free. The math only works while people keep showing up, and at $1.01 billion, they showed up plenty.

What Peacock actually gets

A billion-dollar family movie that kids will replay until the whole house has it memorized. Call it churn insurance. Peacock's entire pitch is carrying something no rival streamer can, and a fresh Mario is the strongest version of that pitch the service gets this year. The 2023 machine, unchanged

Retention this clean doesn't happen by accident. It's less a sequel than a vending machine: feed in the same director-composer team and the same six voices, and out comes the same movie at three-quarters price. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic direct again. Brian Tyler composes again. Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key and Kevin Michael Richardson all came back too.

Whatever anyone thought of Pratt's Mario voice in 2023 (I thought very little of it), a billion dollars twice over ends that argument.

What decides the rest of 2026

Whether Mario gets company in the billion-dollar club. Toy Story 5 has crossed $400 million, a real number, but the club sits 2.5 times above it, a steep climb even for Pixar's usual legs. The likelier challenger is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where the box office predictions already run ambitious.

Until one of them clears the bar, Mario owns 2026 alone, and starting July 30, he owns it from your couch too.
