The Odyssey made an estimated $17.5M on Monday. That's the best Monday of 2026, and the first hard evidence that a $250M three-hour Homer adaptation has weekday demand behind its opening-weekend crowd.

The number, and the two it beats

Universal's epic took an estimated $17.5M on Monday, July 20, per trade tallies reported that evening. It edges Toy Story 5's $17.3M from June 22 for the year's best single Monday. It also clears the $16.4M that Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu posted on its Memorial Day Monday, and that film is the highest-grossing live-action release of 2026 so far.

One asterisk the trades tend to skip: the Mandalorian & Grogu figure came on a holiday Monday, when everyone's off work and matinees run all day. The Odyssey's $17.5M came on a plain July workday. That's the more telling of the two.

Why the Monday matters more than the opening

Every wide release opens big. Nolan's name, 53% of the domestic gross from IMAX and other premium screens, an "A" CinemaScore — all of that was priced in before a single ticket sold for weekend one. The $124.5M opening told you the marketing worked. It told you almost nothing about whether people who weren't already Nolan diehards would show up on a Tuesday.

The first weekday does. Monday is the day the format-chasers have already gone, the opening-night crowd is spent, and what's left is ordinary demand. A soft Monday means the film front-loaded and the total will land close to a low multiple of the opening. A firm one means legs. Monday came in firm.

The people who couldn't get an opening-weekend seat, or wouldn't fight the crowd for one, are still buying tickets.

Against the wider 2026 field, The Odyssey's Monday leads. Against Nolan's own résumé, it's third, and the gap is instructive.

Both Batman films posted bigger Mondays. Both also opened bigger, $158M and $160M domestic against The Odyssey's $124.5M, so they had a taller base to fall from. What The Odyssey doesn't have is a cape or a franchise. It's an original film with no sequel built in posting Monday numbers in the same conversation as the back half of a superhero trilogy. What the number projects

Monday doesn't set a final total. It sets the shape of the curve, and the shape here looks like Nolan's last non-franchise swing. Oppenheimer opened to $82.5M and finished at $329.9M domestic — a 4.0x multiplier, off a $100M budget. Run that same 4.0x against The Odyssey's $124.5M and the math points near $498M domestic. Even a shallower 3.0x run, well below what this Monday hints at, clears $370M.

The budget is where the flip lives. Oppenheimer needed to more than triple its opening just to look healthy against $100M. The Odyssey carries $250M in negative cost, before a dollar of marketing or the exhibitor's cut. It needs the legs. Monday says it might have them. Weekend two, and the second-Friday hold against this Monday's pace, is the number that confirms or kills the projection.
