🔪 AMC+ Buys the US Rights to Kill Jackie — Prime Video Keeps the Other Ten Countries

Ten countries already had Kill Jackie locked for 2026. The United States wasn't one of them, until July 21.

AMC Global Media announced that day it had bought exclusive U.S. streaming rights to Kill Jackie, the eight-episode Catherine Zeta-Jones revenge thriller. It premieres on AMC+ this fall. Every outlet led with the casting. The actual story is underneath: Prime Video commissioned this series back in February 2025 and still carries it everywhere else in 2026. America is the one market getting handed to a competitor.

What AMC+ actually bought

Zeta-Jones plays Jackie Price, a former criminal who spent twenty quiet years reinventing herself as an anonymous, wealthy art dealer. The reinvention ends when she learns a squad of assassins called The Seven Demons has been hired to kill her. She doesn't run from them. Co-created by Conor Keane, Tom Butterworth, Peter Lawson and Damon Thomas, whose résumés (Killing Eve, Gangs of London, John Wick, North Sea Connection) are exactly why every outlet is running the same "Killing Eve meets John Wick" line. Steel Springs Pictures and Fremantle coproduce, in partnership with the Basque company Deabru Kalea Filmeak, with filming across Bilbao, Lisbon, London and Swansea through 2025. Around Zeta-Jones: Daniel Ings, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Bill Paterson, Ron Perlman, Óscar Jaenada, Hattie Hook, Darci Shaw, Raff Law and a deep supporting bench.

The split nobody's headline mentioned

Fremantle handles international sales beyond those eleven markets. Deadline, Variety and C21Media all frame the AMC+ news the same flat way: an acquisition, not a departure. That's accurate. It's also a show Amazon commissioned and developed that most Americans will now watch on a rival's app instead of the one that ordered it.

Nobody involved has said why. No exec quote addresses it, and I'm not going to invent a boardroom rationale trade coverage didn't report. What's confirmed: Amazon kept ten countries. It let the biggest one go.

A detail the press release skipped

Truhen's source material runs deeper than the one book everyone's citing. "The Price You Pay," published in 2018, introduces Jack Price, a drug dealer rather than an art dealer, and note the first-name change for the show. Truhen (Nick Harkaway's pen name; he's John le Carré's son) followed it in 2021 with a sequel called "Seven Demons." In that book, the Seven Demons are Price's own crew: an explosives expert, a Ukrainian assassin, a hacker, one member whose specialty is described in the novel as razor-edged hugs. They work for Price. The show inverts it. The Seven Demons are hired to kill Jackie, not to run with her. Somebody flipped a title character's own crew into her enemies. That's either a deliberate reversal worth a line in the marketing, or a title borrowed without anyone checking which side of the ledger it started on.

Why this looks like a pattern, not a one-off

Five months earlier, in February 2026, AMC+ bought American rights to "This City Is Ours," a Liverpool crime drama Left Bank Pictures made for the BBC, the corporation's most-watched new drama launch of 2025, averaging 5.8 million consolidated UK viewers. Same shape of deal twice: let someone else's budget build the show, buy the American door once the finished product already has a track record (a BBC ratings win, or here, a cast list that reads like an awards ballot). AMC's chief content officer, Dan McDermott, called Kill Jackie "a standout addition to AMC+'s curated slate of premium scripted content" and said Zeta-Jones "commands the screen with a magnetic leading performance." Read past the compliment and the plan is plainer than the quote: AMC+ is stacking finished international drama onto its slate at a moment its longtime engine, The Walking Dead franchise, is down to two shows for 2026.
