Spider-Man: Brand New Day Tracking for 2026's Biggest Opening at $230M+

Box Office Pro now has Spider-Man: Brand New Day tracking for a $230-250M domestic opening. That would be the biggest debut of 2026. It's also a $50M jump from the projection trades were printing two weeks ago.

The number, and how fast it moved

Sony and Marvel's Brand New Day opens July 31. Early three-week tracking, reported at the start of July, pegged the opening at $180-190M. Box Office Pro's latest long-range forecast raised that to $230-250M.

That's the story worth sitting with. Not the headline figure, the slope. A $50M upward revision inside a few weeks means presales and interest are running ahead of the model, not settling into it. Studios love that trajectory. It's also the point at which projections start pricing in a best case, so weigh the top of the range accordingly.

Both numbers are trade estimates. The film hasn't sold a single opening-night ticket that's been counted yet. Treat $230-250M as a forecast with momentum behind it, not a result.

Context: where this lands in 2026

FilmDomestic OpeningNotes
Spider-Man: Brand New Day$230-250M (projected)Sony/Marvel; opens July 31
Toy Story 5$159.6M2026's biggest opening to date
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie$131MAnimated
The Odyssey$124.5MBiggest live-action opening of 2026

Nothing else in 2026 is close. Toy Story 5's $159.6M has held the year's top opening since June, and even the low end of the Spider-Man range clears it by more than $20M. If the forecast holds, Brand New Day doesn't edge out the 2026 field. It laps it.

The one comparison that keeps it honest sits outside this year. Spider-Man: No Way Home opened to $260.1M in December 2021. A $250M ceiling lands just under that. So the ambitious framing here isn't "biggest Spider-Man opening ever" — it's second-biggest, behind a pandemic-era event movie that pulled in every lapsed fan at once. Convenient for the marketing to blur those. Worth keeping straight.

The IMAX problem nobody at Sony scheduled around

Here's the wrinkle. Brand New Day opens without IMAX.

Nolan's The Odyssey locked an exclusive four-week IMAX run when it opened July 17 to $124.5M. That window runs straight through Spider-Man's July 31 launch. IMAX did 23.8% of The Odyssey's domestic opening on its own — real money, not a rounding error — and it's simply not available to Sony this time.

Sony's answer is to push into other premium large-format screens, the non-IMAX PLF circuit, and reportedly set some house records there in the process. Whether that fully replaces the IMAX premium is the open question. PLF tickets carry a surcharge too, but IMAX has historically been the format audiences will drive past two closer theaters to reach. Losing it isn't fatal at these tracking numbers. It's a tax on the ceiling.

That the projection climbed to $230-250M anyway, without the format that usually pads a superhero opening, is the strongest signal in the tracking.

The math the tracking implies

Run the numbers backward and the range says something specific. A $230-250M three-day opening from a Marvel tentpole typically comes off a domestic run in the $550-650M territory, on the standard 2.5-3x opening multiplier superhero films post. That's a rough back-of-envelope, not a forecast — franchise fatigue and August competition can compress a multiplier fast, and Brand New Day has both the fall slate and its own reviews still ahead of it.

There's also the release-date read. July 31 puts the opening across the July-August hinge, which historically front-loads the first three days and leans hard on the following weekend's hold. For a film opening this big, the second-weekend drop is the number that separates a $600M run from a $450M one. None of that is knowable yet. It's the shape the tracking is drawing.

What's actually driving it

Destin Daniel Cretton directs, with Tom Holland back as Peter Parker and a cast that reads like a crossover event: Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal's Punisher, and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk stepping into a Spider-Man film for the first time. The pitch is street-level Spider-Man colliding with the wider MCU's heavy hitters — the kind of "who's showing up" speculation that sells opening-weekend tickets before a single review posts.

This is also the first Holland-led Spider-Man since No Way Home's $260M debut. Four years of gap tends to concentrate demand rather than cool it, which is part of what the revised tracking is reading.

What decides this story next

Two numbers, in order. First, the final pre-sale tallies in the last week of July — that's what turns a $230-250M range into a firm call. Second, the actual July 31-August 2 result, and specifically whether the non-IMAX PLF strategy holds the premium-format share a Spider-Man opening usually banks.

If it opens north of $230M, Brand New Day takes 2026 outright and reframes the fall studio-share race. Track it against every 2026 release ranked once real numbers post. The forecast has momentum. Momentum isn't a receipt.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Spider-Man: Brand New Day tracking to open?

Box Office Pro's latest long-range forecast puts the domestic opening at $230-250M. That's up from the initial three-week tracking of $180-190M reported earlier in July. Both are trade projections, not results — the film opens July 31, 2026.

Would that be the biggest opening of 2026?

Yes, on the high end. $230-250M clears Toy Story 5's $159.6M, currently 2026's biggest domestic debut, by a wide margin. Even the conservative $180M projection would take the year's top spot.

Is this the biggest Spider-Man opening ever?

No. Spider-Man: No Way Home opened to $260.1M in December 2021. Brand New Day's projected ceiling of $250M lands just under it, which would make it the second-biggest Spider-Man opening in history.

Why isn't Spider-Man: Brand New Day in IMAX?

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey holds an exclusive four-week IMAX run through its July 17 opening. Sony is deploying other premium large-format screens instead for Brand New Day's July 31 launch.
